Curriculum Overview

Information for Academic Year 2016-2017
We follow a two-week timetable cycle of 50 periods. Each day consists of five 1 hour lessons with a 10-minute registration time at the beginning of each day and a 30 minute or assembly or tutorial period following the second lesson. The number of hours per cycle given to each subject is set out below.

History 3 hours (4 hours for those who are taking Spanish)
Citizenship (including Religious Education) 2 hours 
Computer Science 4 hours 
A modern foreign language: 
  - French, German 4 hours
  - Spanish 3 hours
Physical Education 4 hours
Students study a rotation of Food Technology, Product Design, Textiles, Sports Studies and Health & Social Care for 3 hours.
Students also study a rotation of Music, Drama, Art, Media Studies and Photography for 3 hours

Year 10


English 8 hours – GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature
Mathematics 9 hours – GCSE Mathematics

Science 8 hours – Double Science GCSE or Biology GCSE and Chemistry GCSE

Citizenship (including Religious Education) 1 hour – non-examined

PE 4 hours – non-examined


Blue Pathway:

Students choose French, German or Spanish GCSE, History or Geography GCSE and 2 options from the subjects below


Purple Pathway:

Students choose Construction or Childcare BTEC, History or Geography GCSE and 2 options from the subjects below


Green Pathway:

Students choose History or Geography GCSE and 3 options from the subjects below

Some students take:

Core Science GCSE 4 hours and IT BTEC or Computer Science GCSE 4 hours

Citizenship (including Religious Education) 1 hour – non-examined

PE 4 hours – non-examined

Key Stage 5

Year 12 and Year 13


Each subject has 9 hours (smaller classes may have a reduced number of hours).

Students study four subjects from a range of AS Level and BTEC in Year 12 and often drop to three subjects in Year 13.  

Some subjects cannot be dropped at the end of year 12 because of restrictions placed by the examination board.
Students without a C grade or above in English or mathematics study for resit GCSEs in that subject.
All students have 1 lesson of Personal Social Health Education that is non examined.
