British Values

The Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development of our students (and staff) are as important as high quality classroom practice. Our approach to embedding SMSC and fundamental British values across our Academy start with targeted continuing professional development (CPD) for staff whom inspire our students each and every day to exceed their academic and vocational goals.

Students SMSC needs are met by a bespoke PSHEE curriculum, themed assemblies, enriched curriculum and extra-curricular clubs. Our SMSC approach is critical to preparing the holistic child, ready for life in modern Britain. Central to this is our high regard for embedding Fundamental British Values across the curriculum and expecting our staff to model these values to the highest of standards.

Fundamental British Values

‘Schools should promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs’ (DfE, 2016)

§  Enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence;

§  Enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England;

§  Encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely;

§  Enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England;

§  Further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures.

§  Further tolerance and acceptance for those with different values, beliefs with respect to our LGBT community;

§  Encourage respect for other people;

§  Encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.

British Values sits at the heart of our ethos and CARES framework. All students are exposed to Fundamental British Values during the tutor PSHEE lessons. In addition to this, the Teaching and Learning team, Behaviour and Wellbeing team work together to ensure that our policies and daily practice function with a strong sense of morality with values that promote kindness, humility and comradery.

This is an example of a PSHEE tutor lesson which delivers Fundamental British Values.

In addition to which, we regularly reflect on many other issues that could potentially affect our students' day-to-day lives:
