Miljan's Jack Petchey Award

Albert Einstein once said "The important thing is to never stop questioning". Every answer ever given all began with one question of a satisfying curiosity. Curiosity can find us and lose us but inevitably becomes the driving ambition to find truth.

Science is swarming with unanswered questions; all over the world scientists are conducting experiments to find answers. These answers are ones that will lead civilisation into continuous evolution until there are no more answers to be given; and even that is a question itself.

To find answers, you must experiment. You must create conditions for multiple situations, each consisting of different variables, factors and controls. Even after you're done, you may not have your answer. However, no experiment is a wrong or bad experiment.
Each mistake you make with each experiment provides correctional information and knowledge to finally produce the right experiment. Thanks to experiments and questions we continue to gain understanding of ourselves and the universe. We have crawled out of the oblivion of ignorance and entered a new state of mind. Our previous knowledge led us to claim the acts of God in the midst of a hurricane or the presence of a healing beggar. Now we have comprehended the physical, down to earth nature of hurricanes, disasters and the biochemistry of immunology. Science has never seized to prove to us that with one feeling of curiosity we can achieve great truths. We used to assume that the sky is the limit but now we have footsteps on the moon.

When I received the honour and merit of the Jack Petchey award, and the £200 with it, I couldn't think of a better area of learning to give it to. I hoped it would improve the science department, even at the slightest, so that maybe it would provide any form of help for me and my A-Levels. For me, the money was well spent on models and equipment and I'm happy to have made the decision I made.
