After receiving investment from Peter Jones, two successful businesses were started by four Year 9 students, Lily Watkins, Baaba Andoh, Andrew Rowland and Brooke Nial. Both successfully gained a profit for the trading period in November. On the 29th November 2013 the final profit submissions were made to the Tenner Tycoon in schools challenge. Over 100 schools across the country have taken part, in the Bexley borough we were competing with two other schools e.g. HACA Temple Grove and Beth’s Grammar. Lily and Baaba’s Business named ‘Kella’ had turned their £20 Peter Jones investment into £157.80 this is a 68% increase in returns. Brooke and Andrew’s group which created Graffiti Art returned a profit of £10.50. | ![]() |

“We sold each small
canvas for 50p (cost £1 for 4) and sold each medium sized canvas for £2.50
(cost £1 each). We also sold a couple big canvas for £5 each. Our small canvas
was most popular but we still sold medium ones too. In total we only made £31.50
but Andrew and I were very proud of our business considering it was our first
time. We thought our idea was very creative and we were lucky Andrew had such
amazing artistic skills. Thank you very much for this opportunity :)“ - Brooke Nial
“I’ve learned so much from this experience, and improved on so many skills, such as communication skills(e.g. how to approach and talk to people), organising skills, selling skills and my brain had a workout with all of the maths this involved! This experience has been so motivating, and it kind of
showed me what it’d be like to run my own business. I liked being in control,
and figuring out what we’d do next, managing money, etc. Not to mention the
money we get to keep. This wouldn't have been possible without the one person
to help make this happen...

The students now need to submit an evaluation report to Peter Jones in order to be considered for the final schools awards in January. We wish them luck and congratulations.
