An exciting year ahead!

It is an absolute delight to welcome our smart and cheerful students into our Academy each day. It is always wonderful to see the meticulous preparation of teachers bear fruit as I tour fantastic lessons all supported by our brilliant support and administrative team. And we do work as a strong and cohesive team at our school with everyone contributing to the whole. And our objective? To provide the best lessons and range of experiences that we possibly can along bright open corridors festooned with truly amazing art, all produced by our own students.

Today as we all basked under the sweltering sun in shirt sleeve order at lunchtime I was gripped by a furious football match on the field surrounded by happy groups of students sheltering under the trees. One Year 7 student asked if I would mind if she played her violin for me tomorrow while other older students invited me to look at the poetry they had written for pleasure. Another student spoke with immense enthusiasm about the band Metallica and his penchant for the drums while a group of our sixth form students discussed their hopes to be the very best in the business world.

Walking around to the PE area at the end of the school day I was met by large groups of students coming out of hard training for matches this season. The enthusiasm of our PE team would be hard to match anywhere and the whole area was literally buzzing with activity as students from a range of activities poured out of the changing rooms. Stopping briefly to chat to staff who were busy planning an outward bound trip to the Lake District at half term I paused to reflect on all the exciting opportunities ahead and the impending visit of Children's Laureate Chris Riddell to Bexleyheath Academy.

Chris is a children's author, illustrator and political cartoonist for The Observer, Literary Review and The New Statesman. He will be visiting our Academy on 23rd November to work with our students on the first of many visits as Chris wishes to form a long and lasting link with ourselves.  Books that may be familiar to you written by Chris are Goth Girl and the Ottoline series. There will be far more about Chris on our website shortly.

I must just thank Cucina for their wonderful food and Kier for all the work they have done over the summer to make our school look so good for September. I must also thank all of our staff who worked so tirelessly over the summer break to celebrate examination results with our students and get ready for what I know will be a most exciting year for us all.
